Common scams in our communities

Scammers target everyone, and some target Native communities specifically.

Scams to watch for

  • Fake per-cap, settlement, or tribal payment messages asking for a fee or your bank details.
  • Prize and lottery scams: "You won! Just pay the taxes first."
  • Romance scams: someone you met online quickly says they love you, then needs money.
  • Job scams: an offer that asks you to pay for training or equipment, or to deposit a check and send some back.
  • Tech support scams: a pop-up or call saying your computer is infected.
  • Government impersonation: callers pretending to be the IRS, Social Security, or police demanding payment.
